Chapter Eleven

Carlton

I soaked in the bath and closed my eyes. I couldn’t explain the comfort that having Dean with me gave me today. I wasn’t sure I would have been able to get through the day without him. The fact that Austin was psychic was a shock, but I felt the warmth from him and believed him immediately. His warning to be careful worried me. I didn’t know who I needed to stay cautious from.

I wondered if the person who killed Dad was trying to kill me? But who? I didn’t know anyone that wanted me dead. It wasn’t that I didn’t have enemies, everyone had people that didn’t like them, but I didn’t have anyone that hated me enough to want me dead. Then again, I didn’t think Dad had anyone that would want him dead.

I sighed and scrubbed my hands up over my body. I lifted my hands and looked at the wrinkled skin of my fingers. A knock on the door roused me from my thoughts.

“Carlton? Just letting you know that dinner is here,” Dean called through the closed bathroom door.

“Thanks, Dean, I’ll be right out,” I said as I sat up, pulled the plug between my fit, and lifted myself out of the bath.

I wonder if he would care if I just wore my pajamas. I quickly dried my body, climbed into the pajamas that smelled like Dad’s washing powder, and smiled. He was so picky about his washing powder. He would only use one brand because it was the same as my mum used. It always made me feel comfortable.

I walked out of the bathroom and down to the kitchen, where Dean had laid out Chinese food containers. “Did you order the whole store?” I chuckled as I looked at all the dishes.

Dean snorted and shook his head. “I couldn’t decide what I wanted. Plus, there is plenty for leftovers.”

I chuckled again. “Mrs. Jovanovic from next door brought me a whole bunch of foods; I don’t think I’m going to have to think of what to eat for the next three months.”

Dean threw his head back and laughed. “That’s fantastic. I wonder if they need to adopt a needy son.”

I smiled. “I bet they would love you. Their children have all grown up and moved away. I know that Mrs. Jovanovic misses them greatly, she always feeds me, and I think she used to bring food for Dad. He would always grumble about the woman trying to make him fat, but I think secretly he loved it.”

Dean laughed as he took his plate over to the dining table. I took a deep breath as I remembered the blood and the half-eaten plate of food.

“What?” Dean asked, suddenly sounding alarmed.

“Um, it’s nothing, sorry,” I said, shaking my head.

“It’s something,” Dean said with a frown. I saw the moment that realization took over Dean’s face. “Oh, how about we eat in the living room?”

I nodded and lifted my plate, taking it into the living room with Dean following me.
